FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug. 5, 2012
SAN FRANCISCO — The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) wishes to express our condolences after the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. Here are a few guidelines for organizations reporting on this tragedy:

The word “Sikh” is pronounced “seek.”
A Sikh temple is also called a “gurdwara” (pronounced GOORD-war-ah).
The Sikh religion is an offshoot of the Hindu religion. It was founded around 1500.
There are 25 million to 30 million Sikhs around the world, most of them in India. About 250,000 to 300,000 Sikhs live in the United States.
As part of their religion, Sikhs are prohibited from cutting their hair. Most Sikh men wear turbans. For this reason, they’re often confused with Muslims. Sikhism and Islam are, of course, two separate and distinct religions.
Sikhs believe in one God.

AAJA’s “Handbook to Covering Asian America” can be a resource in fairly, accurately and sensitively reporting on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The South Asian Journalists Association may be able to provide further assistance.

Folks, it’s that time of year and we’re getting pretty excited. Join us for our annual Texas AAJA statewide reunion 2012 on Saturday, April 21! Our far-flung members will get together in Austin for a once-a-year gathering to reconnect, network and have fun with fellow Texas journalists. Come for socializing with the best and brightest of Texas’s journalism scene and meet some friendly new faces.
AAJA Texas will be providing a picnic lunch at Zilker Park and a reunion dinner at a local restaurant. Bring your family and significant others for a fun weekend in the state capitol. Please RSVP by April 14 (Tax weekend) for our event. And for details and the most up-to-date info on the event, check out our Tumblr.
We’ll also be hosting a student program in the morning that will feature AAJA speakers and volunteers. This isn’t a part of the official social activity, but you’re more than welcome to join us for the panel and one-on-one career counseling and critiques. Please help us spread the word to Austin journalism students and aspiring students -- they don’t have to be Asian or an AAJA member. Here’s the Tumblr link.
Preliminary Agenda (check the Tumblr and your email for updates as we get them):
10 a.m. – AAJA Texas will host a late morning panel for students with advice on their careers and pursuing journalism. The panel will be followed by one-on-one critiques with professional print, online and broadcast journalists (students must RSVP beforehand). Coffee and refreshments will be provided! This isn’t a part of the reunion’s social activities, but please help us spread the word to Austin students. Details on the program are here.
12:30p.m. – We’ll start with an AAJA member picnic lunch at Zilker Park. We’ll serve up the grub -- there will be vegetarian options and drinks, too -- along with some kites, frisbees and the like to brighten up a sunny day. Bring your family, friends, extra kites and any games you’d like! Don’t forget to RSVP.
2:30 p.m. – (TBD). We’re still coming up on options for an afternoon social activity.
6:30 p.m. –AAJA-hosted dinner. Details to come. All food will be provided by AAJA, but a no-show charge may be imposed to help recoup the cost of the meal. Cash bar available.
Driving in from out of town? It’s not the Ritz, but Holiday Inn near Highland Mall has decent rates starting at $110/night and it’s about five miles north of the campus. There’s also quirky offerings through Airbnb. If you’re interested in a roommate, let us know and we'll try to set up folks who are interested.

Kudos to AAJA Analisa Nazareno and Michele Chan Santos for organizing a great event in San Antonio!
Here's a recap of the event provided by Michele:
Several people attended the Lunar New Year festival at the Institute of Texan Cultures, which was emceed by AAJA member Eileen Teves.
The highlight of the day was our dinner at the cozy Thai Lao Orchid, a new restaurant in downtown San Antonio. Attending were Analisa, me, Eileen, University of Texas graduate student Yimou Lee, University of Texas San Antonio professor Juyan Zhang and Dr. Zhang's wife and their daughter, and Analisa's daughter Mia. We enjoyed a relaxing evening of good food (they have great pho there) and lots of conversation in English and Chinese -- Yimou and Dr. Zhang were delighted to be able to speak Mandarin with one another.

The chapter board was honored this summer to award our latest scholarship to James Jeffrey of Austin.
James is currently a graduate journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in writing. His interest in Asia, in particular China, has been fostered by a class he took at UT called Reporting China, which involved a month long trip to China during the summer of 2011, to report there. His time there has sparked a keen desire to learn more and become further involved in writing about China.

What if I haven't been involved in AAJA in the past? This is a great way to get started, then.
AAJA Texas continues to break new ground. On Sept. 11, the chapter held a half-day social media workshop at Southern Methodist University's digital journalism school in Dallas that drew more than 100 people and netted some $500. We put on the event with the Press Club of Dallas. We're very excited as it was the first workshop of its kind in AAJA.
The program focused on teaching journalists and public relations professionals how to tap into social media to cultivate sources and build their personal brands. Panelists included Mike Orren, publisher of Pegasus News; Jake Batsell, SMU digital journalism professor; Jessica Nunez, founder of Nunez PR; Vicky Harres of PR Newswire; Mike Merrill, president of the Social Media Club of Dallas; and our very own Theodore Kim, Dallas Morning News staff writer and AAJA Texas Chapter Vice President. AAJA attendees included Texas Chapter President Iris Kuo; National Advisory Board Rep Tom Huang; and Secretary Aman Batheja.
We're hoping to put on more of these type of events, so stay tuned!.

AAJA Texas treasurer Caroling Lee recently took a new position in New York City. Caroling has done a fantastic job for the chapter, including leading the redesign of our chapter website which debuted in May. We're sorry to see her leave the board (and Texas!) but excited that Priscilla Luong has agreed to step up as the chapter's new treasurer.
Priscilla is an anchor/reporter with KTAB, the CBS Affiliate in Abilene. Since she joined KTAB in 2008, the news team took home the 2010 EMMY "Excellence in My Market" Award for Station Excellence. As a reporter, Priscilla has taken Big Country viewers “Inside UFO Country” and ventured back to her family’s native roots in Vietnam for a special report, “The Fall of Saigon: 35 Years Later.”
Prior to joining KTAB, Priscilla was an intern and freelance production assistant at KTVU Channel 2 News, the FOX Affiliate in Oakland, CA. Her first newsroom experience took her halfway around the globe to the BBC. On the second day of her internship, Priscilla helped break a double murder/suicide story that made world headlines. She was also the Main Host/Executive Producer of her university’s award-winning station, AGTV: UC Davis Television.
A lifelong California girl, Priscilla has been an AAJA member since 2006. Before moving to Texas, she was a student liaison with AAJA Sacramento. She is excited to serve AAJA Texas as the new Treasurer and we're thrilled to have her as a member of the board.

Why AAJA Texas is helping replenish a restricted fund

An important message from AAJA Texas National Representative Tom Huang:
Folks,
I wanted to let you know that AAJA’s governing board has voted to assess each chapter a certain portion of money to go toward replenishing a restricted fund. This has been a difficult process and decision, but all of the chapter boards have agreed to support the national office on this.
The Texas chapter has agreed to contribute $10,000 to this effort. Each chapter’s assessment was based on a percentage calculated by taking the chapter’s assets and dividing that dollar amount by AAJA’s total assets.
Here is some background. Earlier this year, Kathy Chow, AAJA’s new executive director, conducted an audit of the national office’s finances back to 2006. She found that the national office had borrowed from a restricted fund a few years ago to bridge a financial gap and keep AAJA’s programs going. AAJA owes the restricted fund $115,000 over the next four years. That’s in addition to the 2009 deficit of $207,000. Borrowing from the restricted fund was not illegal, but it was not a good financial practice, as that money was earmarked for scholarships and other restricted programs.
The assessment of the chapters will go toward the restricted fund, which will allow the national office to focus on reducing the $207,000 deficit. Sharon Chan and Kathy Chow met with the donor of the restricted fund and explained what had happened. The donor understands and still wants to support AAJA’s future. They have asked to remain anonymous.
Several advisory board members and I have worked over the last few months to push for greater transparency from national and for specific steps to avoid repeating what happened. Here’s what we’ve come up with:
* The national advisory board will review our accounting practices and procedures in order to evaluate and make improvements to our system of checks and balances. We want to ensure excellent accounting practices are put into place.* The advisory board has already committed to a Power of One fundraising campaign to help make AAJA financially sustainable.* The board has already formed a development committee charged with raising money for the organization.* The finance committee is forming an investment team, which will include a financial adviser and a CPA to provide oversight.* The board has recruited an independent task force to review the organization’s accounting principles, practices, procedures; it will report and make recommendations to the board.* The organization is currently undergoing an independent audit.
Aside from the restricted fund issue, greater forces have led to the 2009 deficit. Given what I’ve seen NAHJ, NABJ, ASNE and AASFE experience, it’s hard for me to see how AAJA could have avoided its budget deficit. All of these organizations face declining membership, conference attendance and donations. AAJA could have canceled the last convention, but that would have resulted in a large financial penalty, as well.
Despite this frustrating, daunting situation, I remain committed to AAJA, and I hope you will be, too. As I told the national board, AAJA helped me during the good times, and I can’t abandon them in tough times. If you have questions, e-mail me at thuang@dallasnews.com. Your talent and resourcefulness will help the Texas chapter survive and thrive.

Here’s a note from Ted:“I want to thank the chapter for the opportunity to serve. For those who don’t know me, I write and blog about the city of Plano and other suburban and transportation issues for the Dallas Morning News. I moved to Texas from Indiana, where I covered the state legislature, transportation and air travel for the Indianapolis Star and as a correspondent for USA Today. Before that, I worked in Maryland for the Montgomery Gazette and, later, The (Annapolis) Capital, where I covered the Maryland legislature. I have a B.A. in English and Communications from Boston College and a master’s degree in journalism from American University. I am a second-generation Korean American. Though my background is rooted in print reporting, I’m intrigued by the emergence of social media and other web tools that are changing our industry. I believe that we stand at a pivotal time. And though the news business faces challenges ahead, I remain bullish on our future and believe that our work is needed now more than ever.”
